July 29

As we walk through Trafalgar Square on our way to St. James’s Park, I catch sight of a posse of men in high viz jackets tending what looks like a huge black plastic bird or ‘plane alighting on the fourth plinth in the square.

I have no idea what’s about to be unveiled or when and have decided not to look it up and spoil the surprise.

It has been a week of surprising and amusing sights

Dame Elizabeth Frink’s Horse and Rider on the corner of and New Bond St., and Burlington Gardens seems to be behaving responsibly. Maybe even the artist wouldn’t mind this harmless accessorising of her work.

In Soho Square, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church is shrouded in sheeting, whether for restoration or simple cleaning, I don’t know but I was touched to see that prayer has been moved outside

Covid testing centres have sprung up around us in Soho but this is the first time I have seen signs requesting donations of plasma from people who have had it and recovered. I hope there are lots of them prepared to brave the simple process. Apparently, some donors will be asked to give a blood sample for testing. Others will be asked to give a full plasma donation. This means they can assess more people and find high antibody donors quickly.
The process takes around 45 minutes and will separate plasma from the blood as it’s donated, in a process called apheresis.
This centre is at:
26 Margaret Street,
London,
W1W 8NB
There are more centres in London and more all round the country. Just look up Plasma Donation
